The "Abaca with Three Pigeons" monument, an architectural-sculptural composition, dedicated to the anniversary of five centuries since the first documentary attestation of Cahul, was inaugurated on July 2, 2002. The monument, a work of sculptor Ion Pascal, consists of a column, executed in the Doric style, at the top of which, the three doves on the abacus suggest the three dimensions of the city's history: the past, the present and the future.
Recalling over the years how he thought about and realized the obelisk, Ion Pascal stated the following: "The idea of the column gained a development that was supposed to become a symbolic synthesis: what is Cahul in History? Three essential elements appeared: formless matter, the column with precise shapes and the birds in the freedom of flight. So we have the idea of genesis: from chaos matter and spirit are born, which suggests to us the idea of growth, of material and spiritual development. And the number three symbolizes the three ages and three names that the municipality has: Șcheia, Frumoasa, Cahul.".
