Cahul region

    The municipality of Cahul is the cultural-creative capital of the Republic of Moldova and one of the most important cities of the country, a socio-cultural, academic, economic center, with multiple opportunities and potential for development.

    The town is located in the southwestern part of the Republic of Moldova, on a plateau near the Prut River, 175 km from Chisinau - the country's capital. Located on the immediate border of the European Union, through the 3 international border crossing points Galati (Romania) - Giurgiulești, Oancea (Romania) - Cahul and Reni (Ukraine) - Giurgiulești, but also access to the Danube through the only port in the country - the Port International Liber Giurgiulesti, favors the entry of tourists from other European countries.

    The city of Cahul acquired the status of municipality in 2017, having in its composition the village Cotihana . The total area of ​​the municipality is 33.91 km2, and around 40,000 inhabitants live on the territory of the municipality, which represents 32% of the total population of the district/region of Cahul.

    In the last 10 years, the Municipality of Cahul has launched an international cooperation process by signing 18 twinning agreements with localities from Europe and other continents. Half of these twinnings are developed with localities in Romania, namely with the cities/municipalities of Galați, Brăila, Bîrlad, Tecuci, Vaslui, Câmpina, Iaşi, Medgidia and Constanța. Cahul also cooperates with the localities of Ismail (Ukraine); Port-sur-Saone (France); Leiria (Portugal); Siauliai and Jelgava (Lithuania), Bankia (Bulgaria), Novoson etc. (Poland), Carmagnola (Italy) and Tomi (Japan). Cooperations are mostly aimed at the cultural field.

    The municipality of Cahul – the first city in the Republic of Moldova recognized as a "Learning City". The UNESCO global network of "Learning Cities" includes 230 cities from 64 countries, and the municipality of Cahul became a member of the global network in 2020, demonstrating that effective lifelong learning policies and practices can support the development of inclusive cities, safe, resilient and sustainable and can contribute to the achievement of the "Agenda 2030". The municipality of Cahul is an important academic center for the Republic of Moldova thanks to the "BP Hasdeu" State University and the cross-border branch of the "Lower Danube" University in Galați (Romania). The State University "Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu" from Cahul is a public institution, founded on June 7, 1999, with the aim of training and providing the localities in the south of the Republic of Moldova with highly qualified personnel, thanks to its three faculties: the Faculty of Law and Public Administration, Faculty of Humanities and Pedagogical Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Engineering and Applied Sciences.

    There are 2 colleges in Cahul: the "Iulia Hasdeu" College and the College of Medicine; 2 Vocational Schools (Vocational Schools No. 1 and No. 2, respectively). Vocational schools provide dual technical vocational education through the programs proposed to students for the acquisition of professions in demand on the labor market.

    The municipality of Cahul is the only spa town in the Republic of Moldova, and the district of Cahul has the greatest tourist potential among all the regions of the country, having healing mineral waters and the most famous sanatorium in the country, the largest natural lakes in the country ( Manta and Beleu), 4 natural forest reserves and a reserve of medicinal plants, the "Prutul de Jos" reserve being included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

    The region has an accommodation capacity of over 2000 places, which includes hotels, leisure areas, dozens of guesthouses and rural houses launched only recently.

    • It is one of the main wine-growing regions of the country, with an area of ​​about 3 thousand hectares of vineyards, 8 wineries and 3 wineries, most of them located on the territory of Valu lui Traian, a region demarcated for the production of wine products with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)
    • It is considered the region with the largest number of folk craftsmen: 4 craft centers and 45 folk craftsmen, processing vegetable fibers, sheepskin, wood; leatherwork, costume making, sewing and embroidery, etc.
    • It is considered a multi-ethnic city where multiculturalism and ethnic diversity are supported and promoted. Being the only city in the Republic of Moldova that holds the "Friendship of Peoples" Order.
    • Several national and international festivals are held in the municipality of Cahul, but also in the region, among them: the "Nufărul Alb" International Folklore Festival, the "Crescendo" International Classical Music Festival, the "Moldox" International Documentary Film Festival, "Faces of Friends" music festival, National Ethno-Folk Festival "Dulce Floare de Salcâm", Văleni, etc. me
